Charles Koppelman
Biography
Koppelman is a filmmaker, writer, and opera producer. He was born and raised in Los Angeles. His father was a film editor and writer, and his mother was a schoolteacher. He attended the University of California at Santa Cruz and UC Berkeley, where he received a master’s degree in political science.
He is currently in production on three documentaries: Expensive To Be Me is about a $100 million Ponzi scheme run by Tom Girardi, one of America’s most successful attorney, which also benefitted his wife Erika Jayne of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills; We’ve Seen Fire is about California wildfires as seen through the eyes and lenses of three world-class photojournalists; and From Havana to Venice traces a 15-year journey making Cuba’s first new modern opera in over sixty years.
His first film, Squatters: The Other Philadelphia Story aired on PBS nationally, and was honored at the San Francisco Film Festival. Koppelman produced and co-wrote The Circle of Recovery for Bill Moyers which aired as a PBS Special. He wrote and directed the dramatic feature film Dumbarton Bridge about a black Vietnam veteran, his Amerasian daughter, and their search for identity and community. Available from Netflix.
